The Top 10 Highest Paid Footballers in the World
To say that football has gone mad is the understatement of the century. When Yaya Toure swapped the bench at the Camp Nou in Barcelona for the Arab millions of Eastlands recently, he did so to the tune of a reported $290,000 a week. As if that is not enough the figure will rise to almost $350,000 in April when new tax laws take over in the UK. All that for a player who, quite frankly, might not even be the first choice at his position at Manchester City as Gareth Barry, Patrick Vieira, and Nigel de Jong are all battling for that spot. Though Toure’s contract is absurd, his lack of major sponsorship deals prevent him from taking a spot on this list of the highest paid footballers in the world. Here is a look at the ten highest paid soccer players of 2010.
10. Steven Gerrard – Liverpool – England – $18m
Liverpool’s Captain Fantastic starts this list of top ten soccer players thanks to major sponsorship deals with the likes of Adidas and Lucozade. A hero of the Kop at Anfield, he is signed with the reds until 2013, and despite the lack of Champions League football in 2010, it seems that new boss Roy Hodgson has convinced Gerrard to stay. He wouldn’t look right in another team’s shirt anyway.
